You can apply for asylum at the border or inside the territory of the country in which you wish to seek asylum.
Submitting your application
According to Georgian legislation, asylum applications may be submitted at the border crossing points, within the territory of Georgia, or in transit zones. Applications cannot be submitted at Georgian diplomatic missions abroad, as Georgian law requires the applicant’s presence on the territory or at the border of Georgia.
Need to be present
This means that you need to find your way to the territory or the border of Georgia in order to access the asylum procedure. If you contact the authorities of Georgia remotely from your country of origin, they will not be able to register your application or arrange for your arrival.
At the border
You can express your wish to apply for asylum to a border police officer at the border crossing point. According to the Law of Georgia on International Protection, your application must be registered immediately after expressing the wish to receive international protection, and in any case, no later than 3 working days after the request is made.
Inside the country
You can also apply for asylum to the competent authority within the territory of Georgia, which is the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia (specifically, the Migration Department under the Ministry). The authorities are required to register the application and initiate the relevant procedures without delay.
Relevant documents
After you have applied for asylum, you are required to submit all relevant documents for identification purposes and documents related to your travel, as well as any evidence supporting your application for protection. You will be photographed and fingerprinted, and the authorities will take an initial statement from you regarding your arrival in Georgia and the reasons for your asylum application.
